MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET . Anhydrous HCl . SECTION I – CHEMICAL PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION Product Name: Hydrogen Chloride . Product Overview: Anhydrous hydrogen chloride, also referred to as hydrogen chloride gas, is a clear, colorless gas with an extremely sharp odor. “Anhydrous” means dry or without water. The anhydrous material is flammable in air but as others point out you will feel the itch in any moist areas and be driven away by the fumes long before you will be present in a fire. Industrially ammonia fires have been known but they are considerably difficult to induce. Avoid anhydrous ammonia contact with chlorine, which forms a chloramine gas, which is a primary skin irritant and sensitizer. Anhydrous ammonia is incompatible with acetaldehyde, acrolein, boron, chloric acid, chlorine monoxide, chlorites, nitrogen tetroxide, perchlorate, sulfur, tin and strong acids.
Solvay is a global leader in Soda Solvay® anhydrous sodium carbonate production, using two different processes: the traditional Solvay ammonia process and the refining of natural Trona (or sesquicarbonate). However concentrated ammonia solutions may give off ammonia vapours. Ammonia gas is generally not considered a serious fire or explosion hazard because ammonia/air mixtures are difficult to ignite. A relatively high concentration of ammonia gas must be present in order for ignition to occur.
